Easter Service

Our end of term Easter Service was held at St Faith’s church for our school community.  The children in Class 4 led the service and reflected on the meaning of Easter and why Christians celebrate it.  The school rejoiced in song and the Reverend Jeremy Goulston spoke about the purpose of Lent and the preparation before the celebrations of Easter.  We wish you all a Happy Easter.

RE Big Question Day

On Friday 31st March the whole school debated ‘What does it mean to be a Christian in the world?’ as part of the school’s enquiry based Religious Education curriculum.  The oldest children travelled to Jerusalem and learnt about the claims of the different world religions on the city. They held a debate and split into groups to come up with a Christian charity to support people of all faiths around the world. Other classes focused on different ways of Christian worship and baptism across the world. Our youngest children in the school began to think about how Easter is celebrated in different countries.

World Poetry Day and Poetry Recital

To celebrate World Poetry Day, we held our own ‘Shellingford School Poetry Recital’ on Friday 24th March.  The event was organised by Mrs Roberts and involved class reciting a poem that they had practised in school which they then performed to parents and families.  Along with performing with their classmates, the children were also invited to participate individually by choosing their favourite poem to perform in front of the whole school.

National ‘Pi’ Day

We celebrated Pi Day is on March 14th (3/14) around the world. Pi (Greek letter “π”) is the symbol used in mathematics to represent a constant — the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter — which is approximately 3.14159. The children explored different activities around this theme in their classes from using balls and hoops to exploring... Size and shape Circumference (measurement) Bounce-ability! Incline plane Time Gravity ... to creating dream catchers, pizza pies and cylinders to solve geometry problems.

World Book Day Celebration

We held a special day of activities at school on Friday 3rd March. The children were invited to come to school wearing a costume that reflected a character from a book or story that they particularly enjoy.  The children worked in their ‘family groups’ (mixed ages/classes) on a range of literary activities throughout the day.  The day culminated with our weekly Celebration Assembly when parents found out about what the children had been getting up to and viewed the wonderful array of costumes that children were dressed up in.

Children on the Edge Project: The Ultimate Sporting Challenge!

Throughout 2016-17 Shellingford CE (A) Primary School and ‘The Simon Drew Foundation’ are working together to support the charity ‘Children on the Edge’. Over a million Syrians have been forced to flee their homes and have ended up in refugee camps in Lebanon. ‘Children on the Edge’ is working to provide education for Syrian refugees living in tent school in the camps, as well as employing teachers from the refugee community. Our second big ‘Children on the Edge’ fundraiser took place in February when we held an ‘Ultimate Sporting Challenge’ sponsored event when pupils and staff took part in a run, hike and scramble in and around the school grounds. The week culminated in a family walk up at White Horse Hill with FoSS providing us with refreshments. An incredible £2379.90 was raised. Your generous donations will have made an enormous difference to the lives of vulnerable Syrian refugee children in Lebanon. Thank you for your kind support.

Safer Internet Day: School Open Afternoon

On the Friday 10th February we held a whole school Open Afternoon and opened our doors to parents and family friends to view the school as a ‘working school.’  The whole school had spent the day learning about internet safety.  A range of age appropriate eSafety learning activities were taught to each class throughout the day which then culminated in an Open Afternoon.  The children always talk about how much they enjoy these afternoons and the opportunity to ‘show off’ their learning to their parents.

Music Workshop and Serenade Event – Friday 20th January 2017

‘Wise Moves’ provided an African Drumming Workshop for the children.  All the children learnt to play different African call and response rhythms and were taught about the culture of Ghana. The day culminated in our school Music Serenade with each class performing to parents and family friends all they had learnt during the day. We also invited young instrumentalists to ‘serenade’ us and a number of pianists and a violinist took part in the performance.  It was lovely to be reminded of what a musical school we are!
